Halcyon Medical Centre - New Facility
Martineau Place Birmingham
Role – Complete Mechanical & Electrical Services – Design & Build (12,800 sq. Ft)
This project posed significant engineering challenges as the new facility is located on the first floor of a 1950s building that had been modified and extended at various times during its life with resulting structural concrete and supporting steel intrusions.
Additionally, the new facility is land locked with external exposure only on the frontal elevation thereby limiting services penetrations for ventilation and air conditioning plant etc. The external condensers for the air-conditioning systems had to be located on the roof above the 12th floor of the adjacent Staybridge Suites hotel.
Being an NHS Medical Facility, all the services had to be designed and installed in compliance with all of the latest Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) in addition to the usual British Standards etc.
The services provided were as follows: -
- LED lighting throughout with presence detection control
- LED examination lamps
- General power with individual energy metering
- Building Management System
- Fire Alarm System
- Emergency Lighting
- Staff Attack System
- Intruder Alarm System
- Door Access Control
- CCTV System
- Structured Cabling
- Specialised Heat Recovery Ventilation
- VRV Heat Recovery heating and cooling
- Piped Water Services
One of the features of the new VRV system is providing hot water for both radiators and sinks from Daikin Hydro Boxes. This means that the heat removed from areas being cooled is used to heat the hot water.
This has resulted in the building achieving and EPC rating of C which is very good when considering the age of the building and its poor insulation properties etc.
