The Ban of the Use of R22

R22 is the refrigerant gas found in the majority of air conditioning equipment over 10 years old.

From 1st January 2015 it will be illegal to use R22 to service air conditioning equipment and recycled or reclaimed HCFC may no longer be used.

This means that it is permissible to continue using equipment that contains HCFCs beyond the phase-out dates, but there must be no maintenance or servicing undertaken on the equipment that involves breaking into the refrigerant circuits, i.e we can clean the unit/visually check the system, but cannot check the system pressures.

Why is R22 being banned?

R22 is about to be banned because it is reducing the performance of the ozone layer. It is vital that we avoid any ozone layer depletion to protect the earth from dangerous and harmful radiation which in turn will have a detrimental effect on the environment and the population.

History behind the Ozone Layer

In 1985, when scientists discovered a hole in the Ozone Layer just over Antarctica, an international agreement called Montreal Protocol was put in place to reduce the use of chemicals, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), which harm the ozone layer. To phase CFCs out, they were initially replaced by hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC), R22, but these are now being phased out because they also have negative effects on the environment. A plan was put in place to remove the HCFC, R22, from use in refrigerators, freezes and air conditioning systems.

How are the Government enforcing the ban of R22?

It was decided that HCFCs would be banned in the manufacture of any systems after 2003. To further reduce R22, the government have enforced, that by 2015, it will be illegal to have air conditioning which features or needs to be maintained by R22.

Which systems are under threat from the new law?

Any AC equipment that has been manufactured before 2003, which runs on R22, will need to be replaced.

If you haven’t already, it is important that you plan to replace any air conditioning systems which feature R22 by 2015 to abide by the new legislation.
